Fragments is a photo that has either more than one photo combined or is edited to be completely different to everything that you have seen.To take a good fragments photo you have to either take a portrait or a photo of one object, with the portrait you could take multiple photos of one person then layer them on top of each other.when you edit the photos you could cut shapes out and move them, pixleate the image or add colour and much more.

I chose this project because I find it really interesting and quite simple and I want to learn how to edit using photoshop and I think it is a good project to use to lean to edit.I think I could be very creative in this topic because there is allot of things you can do and I have seen allot of things that have inspired me to make a fragment piece.I am going to be taking photos of objects to practise editing then when i learn how to edit I will then move on to taking portraits then editing them.
Bruno del Zou
Brno Del Zou uses a digital camera and takes multiple photos from different angles and then layers them to still look like a human face and then takes a photo but it is still odd looking because the features of a human face would be enlarged or not in the right place. He still uses the rough shape of the human face and connects each line well in his photos.
|
I am planning to use these photos to then layer like in Brno Del Zou's work,I need to use photoshop to edit and zoom in on parts of faces and things and then layer each image like a collage.
Larissa Honsek
Larissa Honsek's work if fragments because see makes double exposures with a pinhole camera. To recreate her work I would need to take portraits and use a simple background and use a pinhole camera or pinhole lens to get the black vignetting around the image,I'd also need to do a double exposure or more like in her photographs.
|
I chose this abstract photo because I like the harsh vignetting around the border of the image and the double exposure with her arms moved in each exposure. I also like the fact that within the composition that the model is in the centre although her arms are scattered around the frame. This is why I chose the image as there was a lot going on within the image. It is easy to see the double exposure as the overlapping feature is mainly the arms, it relates to my topic as the arms look like fragments of her body. I also like that none of the lines are clear(in focus) because it blends into one and looks as if she has multiple arms. This image also had a lot of different tones that give the image depth. The space around the body is covered up or masked by the vignette which makes us focus on the model. I also like the fact that darker tones were used for the vignette as it changes the mood of the photograph. I am going to try to recreate some of Larrisa Honsek's work because I think it would be challenging. Pinhole photography can be very hit and miss but I can still use my experiments as the images would be fragmented.
To remake her work I'm going to use a digital camera with a pinhole lens but with -double exposure -shadows -potraits -midshot/close up evaluation of my experiment. I tried to remake this piece and it didn't go well,I set the exposer time right and the iso but I just couldn't find out how to make the double exposer so Im not sure if it will work that way but another way I could do it is take photos in the same place of the same person and layer the images where the person is on top of them self and hen make the top photo a lower contrast so you can see through it and see the photo behind which will give it a double exposure look,I would do this on photoshop. |
Lorena Cosba
this is my favourite photo by Lorena Cosba because of the layering in the photo and how she has ripped holes in the photo to show the background photo of the old lady. Also to make it stand out even more the foreground photo is in black and white and the background photo is in colour. If i was going to recreate this photo i'd need to use black and white in one photo, one photo in colour ,both being portraits.I'd need to rip holes into the foreground photo to show the colour of the background photo.

experiment
I struggled to do my original idea(the pinholes) so I resorted to do my second idea of layering the images and then cutting/tearing the top image so the background image comes through.
I am now going to move on and take potraits and layer them like Brno Del Zou and Lorena Cosba.
so I need to take some photos of people that have the same background and i also need to try and get the size of the subjects heads the same size so it would be easier to put inline.

I first took two photos of different people, then put one in negative then printed and cut and tore the positive photo to show the negative photo under it,I also had to try make it as in line with the other persons features. Then edited it to make the contrast stronger and make the dark parts of the negative photo darker.

I made a digital and another version of the same piece.I made sure that both photos were inline with each other.I like the torn one more because I think it links better to Lorena Cosba than the digital one because you can't see the the tear marks on the paper.
Duane Micheals
All of the subjects in these photos are all in focus except the middle one and the none in the middle on the right because they both are taken in a narrow room where the end of the room is out of focus. There is not allot of light in these photos ,the most light in these photos are in the bottom right corner and in the end of the room.
With this piece I wanted to moved away from the portraits and focus on combining multiple photos so I made a collage like piece using 5 different photos.
IDEAS
I could put a shape or something over photographic paper then use an enlarger to print a photo onto the paper so i would have a white shape over an image.

lucas simoeslucas simoes mainly takes potraits then burns out the faces or manipulates the face in some way.
lucas simoes uses a type of photo paper which burns quite slowly but also changes the colour around the burn marks which explains the yellow/orange ring around the hole.Another way lukas makes his photos is by layer his images in different shapes or allot of the same image cut up like the one in grey and the one above it. |
I am going to be re-making some of Lucas Simoes work and also going to be using photograph collages and then cutting them up and changing the order of the image.
fragments piece
I started by looking at fragments with layering .I first used Iorena Cosba's work and how she layers peoples faces and how she would use different peoples faces and then layer them.I then looked at lucas simones work and how he edits peoples faces.so I used these two ideas and put them together by photographing a skull then layering it on top of other peoples faces. At first I thought the layering idea would be quite easy but I had to learn how to use photoshop to layer the skull which I found hard at first. In photoshop I changed the colour of the skull and made the tones darker to show more detail to make the skull really stand out.If I had more time I think I might try to layer each of the photos I made and make the images transparent so you could see all of the images at the same time in one photo. When i first started to edit the photos I didn't edit the skull so the skull wouldn't look right on the face because it was too bright so I started to edit the face with photoshop, making the skull contrast more, which made the skull have more tones.I also started to edit the background, making it darker so the foreground would look brighter which draws your eye to the middle where the subject is.
